Bridging the World through Horticulture

ISHS SCIENTIFIC WRITESHOP

The IHC2018 will 'Bridge the World through Horticulture' and will establish a forum for exchange of experiences, knowledge and friendship. Taking this opportunity, we wanted to offer two short trainings for participants who want to enlarge their professional capacity on Organic Management or on Good Agricultural Practices and widen their networks. The lecturers will be given well-known experts coming from academia, NGOs and the private sector. The tentative program may undergo fine tuning based upon the profiles of the participants but will ensure attendance to the IHC2018 scientific sessions. Training programs are free of charge to the International Horticultural Conference participants however the number of participants for each course is limited with 25.

Training session - ISHS SCIENTIFIC WRITESHOP

Objective:to strengthen the capacities of young scientists to publish in international journals of horticulture

Time schedule: 1 or 2 days

Max. number of participants: 16

Requirements: participants shall have some results ready for publication or a pending manuscript to improve in order to work on applied case studies

 

Day 1      Round table of participants, rationale on scientific publications, on scientific journals in horticulture with examples from FRUITS, EJHS and others. Communicating a scientific message: importance for authors/readers. Keys to communicate scientific information:  originality and relevance, being clear, precise and logical. Oral presentation by the participants of each case study for publication. Role of the various sections of an article, focus on the title, keywords and the abstract.
Day 2  Focus on English drafting the introduction and conclusion. Use of tenses, liaison words, structuring a paragraph or a section (fast reading technique). Use of the results from case studies to draw the key messages: work on figures and tables (to be independent from the text). Back to the abstract to check altogether how to improve it (critical reading).
